Four private agencies licensed to recruit Gambians as domestic workers in Saudi Arabia
Date: 24th September 2024
Minister Joof presented a motion to ratify a bilateral labor agreement between The Gambia and Saudi Arabia. This agreement is designed to recruit domestic and skilled workers from The Gambia, ensuring they are employed under proper working conditions. He emphasized that the recruitment process will be outsourced to registered agencies, which will be responsible for identifying candidates based on the requirements set forth by the Saudi government. The entire process will be monitored by the Gambia Department of Labour to ensure compliance with the agreement.
Minister Joof reassured lawmakers that selected workers will receive clear disclosures about the terms and conditions of their employment prior to departure. Each worker will be required to sign their contract in The Gambia, which will outline their salary and working conditions. Additionally, workers will have the option to take a holiday after 11 months of service, with the choice to spend it in Saudi Arabia or return to The Gambia. Their passports and mobile phones will remain in their possession, allowing them to communicate with the Gambian embassy and the Ministry's technical team.
Concerns were raised by several Members of the Assembly regarding the treatment of migrant workers in Gulf countries, particularly women. In response, Minister Joof highlighted the safeguards embedded within the agreement aimed at protecting workers from potential maltreatment. He noted that both The Gambia and Saudi Arabia are signatories to the International Labour Organization’s conventions, ensuring adherence to laws that protect workers' rights and dignity.
Minister Joof also mentioned the government's existing agreements with the United Arab Emirates and Spain, and noted that Qatar has expressed interest in partnering with The Gambia for recruitment purposes. He emphasized that while the recruitment process will be managed by private agencies, the Department of Labour will oversee compliance and rectify any issues that arise.
Ultimately, the Assembly ratified the agreement, paving the way for Gambians to seek employment opportunities in Saudi Arabia under regulated and humane conditions.
